How to Make a Hands-Free Leash

Running, pushing a stroller or drinking a cup of coffee while holding a traditional dog leash can be awkward. Running with a leash in your hand can actually change the way you run, and if you have children, you often need both hands free to clean a face, safely cross a street or tie a shoe. A leash that goes around your waist frees your hands when you are out with your dog. A hands-free dog leash allows you to do more with your dog.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a belt. This can be a traditional belt or one you buy specifically for the hands-free leash. An adjustable nylon belt with a side-release buckle is a good choice. Wear the belt over or under outerwear, as tightly or as loosely as desired. You should be able to put it on and remove it quickly.

Pull the loop end of the leash--the part that normally goes around your wrist--under your belt. The loop will be between your belt and your clothing so the leash hangs down parallel to your leg.

    • 3

Pull the buckle end of the leash up through the loop and pull it tight. This will secure the leash to your belt. Note that simply threading the belt through the loop on the leash would allow the leash to move along the length of the belt, possibly snagging or ripping clothing.

Attach the leash buckle to the dog̵7;s collar.
