How to Make Your Own Pet Waste Disposal Unit

Pet waste can be a constant source of frustration for pet owners and communities. Many waste management companies will not pick up bags that contain pet waste, and it does not decompose easily or quickly if left to the elements. Commercial pet waste composting units are available for purchase, or you can make your own for a fraction of the cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill 1/2- to 1-inch holes in the sides of the plastic trash can, about every 6 to 8 inches.

    • 2

Use the keyhole saw to cut the bottom out of the trash can.

    • 3

Dig a hole to accommodate the trash can. The hole should be wide enough for the can to fit easily without excessive room on the sides, and deep enough so that only the top rim of the can is above ground, to accommodate the lid.

    • 4

Add rocks to the bottom of the hole for drainage. You could also use chicken wire, pea gravel or other materials.

    • 5

Place the trash can in the hole and adjust it until it is securely settled. Secure the lid onto the can.

    • 6

When you add pet waste to the can, add septic starter and water according to the starter package directions.
