Instructions

Consider the size of your dog (or the size it will grow to be) when planning your dog bed. Male Great Danes typically grow to be about 4 feet long. You will want to create a bed that is at least this long in order for it to stretch out.

    • 2

Decide on the type of dog bed you want to make. You may want to add a cushioned border around the edge of the bed or you may simply want a bed shaped like a rectangle that is comfy for your Great Dane.

    • 3

Purchase the materials you need to make the bed. You can purchase foam at many craft supply stores. When making a cover for the bed, it is a good idea to select a material that can be easily cleaned.

    • 4

Using the piece of foam as your guide, measure and cut out the top and bottom pieces for foam bed cover, allowing an extra 5/8 inch for the seam. Then measure the sides of the foam and cut out the material for those pieces of the cover as well, again allowing for a 5/8-inch seam. The zipper will go in the bottom seam at one end.

    • 5

Sew the cover for the bed on your sewing machine, using a running stitch of between 10 to 12 stiches per inch. First sew in the zipper, making sure it will be on the outside when you turn the cover inside out. Then sew the rest together. While it is not absolutely necessary that you make a cover that can be removed, it is a good idea so that the cover can be periodically cleaned.

Slide the cover over the foam and close the zipper.
