How to Make Your Own Dog Poop Scoop

If you own a dog, by default, you also own the rights to clean up their dog poop. Not a fun job by any means but you gotta do what you gotta do (and so does your dog!). Poop bags are great for on the run but when you're at home, the last thing you want, or need, to do is pick up that squishy mess with your hands, bag covering or not.

A better alternative is to use a pooper scooper. These handy gadgets are normally a rake or a shovel on one side and a flat pusher on the other side attached to handles that keep your nose safely out of harms way.

Trouble is, these things are often expensive. Not as a one time cost but in replacing the often cheaply made contraptions. A better idea is to make them yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a mini garden rake. Maybe you could dream up a way of making your own but for the cost and time involved, the purchase is the winner in this scenario. Long handle is a plus, it's the narrow rake end we are after here. The kind made for going between plant rows. Metal is best.

    • 2

Mark your pan for the size of scoop/pusher you want. A decent sized pan will easily be enough to cut in half to make two of these. Always great to have a spare on hand. Marking with a black magic marker should do the trick nicely.

    • 3

Put on your safety goggles and saw your pan along the line you made. The cut end will be the side you are scooping dog poop with. A quick run with the grinder wheel is a nice touch. It can also aide in sharpening it for you, which may come in handy should your dog have loose stools one day.

    • 4

Drill a hole into the side of the pan that sits directly across from the cut side. This hole needs to be centered. Eyeballing it is fine.

    • 5

Lay your cut pan on the floor and stand your broom handle up next to it where it will eventually be fastened for use. Insert your black marker into the hole you drilled so it will mark your broom handle.

    • 6

Drill through your broom handle at that mark. Drill all the way through the handle.

    • 7

Place your washer over your bolt and push your bolt through the inside section of the pan and through the handle. Screw on your nut to secure.

    • 8

Proceed out into your yard and follow your dog around. Enjoy your new pooper scooper!
