How to Install Electric Dog Fence

An electric dog fence may seem mean, but it is only a slight electric shock that the dog will experience. The electric dog fence is a great feature for any pet owner as they allow you to let your dog go outside and you don't have to build a real dog fence to keep your pet contained. An underground invisible dog fence is the cost effective choice that is easy to install and use.

Instructions

Measure the area you want to contain your dog in. For your open yard you can have your invisible dog fence as big as you want, but the cost of the underground electrical wire will begin to add up. Have the fence perimeter at least a foot away from every sidewalk so you have ample area to dig down to lay the wire. After you measure the projected length around your invisible electric dog fence add 10% more to factor in your own error. Purchase an electric dog fence from any pet supply or home store; also purchase the correct length of suggested electric wire with your invisible dog fence kit.

Dig a 3 to 6 inches deep trench around the perimeter of where your invisible electric dog fence will be. Don't dig square corners, rather slightly rounded corners so laying your invisible electric dog fence will be easier. Lay the wire in the bottom of the trench. Push the ends of the wire into the bottom connectors on electric dog fence charger. Plug the charger into a standard 110 volt outlet.

Bury the wire with the soil and grass you dug out for the trench. Connect the electric collar to your dog. Attach the collar to your dog at a setting that is fairly snug so they can't scratch the electric collar off. Let them run around the yard to see if the system is working. The dog will stop in place or yip/bark if the electric fence is working.
