Finding the Right Material
-
Find the right material for your small animal pet hammock. Most of the time, you are going to want to go with a material that is comfortable, durable and easy to wash. The best materials are high pile cotton, polyester or felt. You want to stay away from light cotton, as this can rip or be chewed through. Some good material pieces include old terry cloth hand towels, cheap polyester blankets or felt pieces that are left over. The size of the material you use is going to depend on the animal. For sugar gliders, the size of a washcloth or small hand towel would be fine. For guinea pigs or ferrets, you'll want a large hand towel or even a small bath towel. Make sure the material is clean and there aren't any strings hanging off. Wash it with allergy or infant detergent and use two rinse cycles so there isn't soap in the material.
Securing your Hammock
-
Secure the hammock to the cage. There are a couple of ways that you can do this. You can hang it in the corner of the cage by tying all four ends of the towel or blanket to the cage bars in a way that is secure and allows the fabric to hang like a hammock. Or, you can tie small strings to each of the four corners of the fabric and then tie those strings to the cage bars at the top of the cage.
You can use any method to attach the hammock to the cage. Keep in mind that the hammock should be secure, and it should hang only a few inches from the bottom of the cage, so the pet won't get hurt if it falls.
