Because of their natural tendency to jump and pull when first introduced to the leash, a harness can be an important tool for successful puppy training. Attaching their leash to a harness instead of a collar will protect their delicate necks from strain and give the handler better control. If your puppy develops bronchitis or an upper respiratory disease your veterinarian may suggest using a harness until the condition is healed. Puppies with a small head and a thick neck may easily pull loose from their collars and create an unsafe situation for themselves or their owners. No matter why you decide to use one, a properly fitted harness can keep your puppy healthy and safe.

Place the tape measure directly behind your puppy's front legs and wrap it around her chest. Record this measurement.

Look for the corresponding size on the harness package. While sizes may vary according to manufacturer, the chest-girth measurement will give you an accurate sizing tool no matter what product you're purchasing.

Check the fit. Place two fingers between your puppy and the harness. Your fingers should slide easily underneath the harness at all points.
