There are many reasons why a harness may be preferred over a standard dog collar for dachshunds and other dogs. Some medical conditions such as bronchitis, upper respiratory disease or a sensitive trachea prohibit using a collar around the neck. Dogs that jump or pull on a leash are easier to train and control when they are in a harness. Due to their thick necks and small heads, dachshunds can easily slip out of their collars, making a harness a better choice for keeping them safe. Whatever your reason for choosing a harness for your dachshund, it must fit properly to enhance your dog's health and well-being.

1
Wrap the tape measure around your dachshund's chest, just behind the front legs. Record this measurement.
-
2
Compare the chest measurement to the corresponding size on the harness package. Measuring instructions may vary, but the chest-girth measurement should serve as a universal size indicator.

3
Check for proper fit by sliding two fingers underneath the harness at all points. Your fingers should move easily between your dachshund and the harness.
