Instructions
Covering the Bottom of a Whelping Box
First, measure the inside of the whelping box. Cut incontinence pads to fit inside of the box--very slightly smaller than the inside of the box. Cut two pieces of fleece that measure the same, except add 1 inch to the width of each piece and 2 1/2 inches to the length of each piece.
With right sides together, sew up sides of the piece so that it resembles a pillowcase. Overcast these sides with a zig-zag stitch.
Sew on two or three Velcro strips (this depends on how big your cover is) to the end of the cover (front side of fabric), spacing evenly along the edge. Center the strips about 1 1/2 inches from the end of the piece. You will sew the smoother surface pieces on one side, and the more nubby on the other side. Sew in a box shape, slightly inside the edges of the Velcro strip. Measure carefully, so that the two pieces will meet exactly and therefore provide a secure closure.
Zig-zag the open edges with the machine. Turn under 1 inch and stitch hem in place with large stitches. Turn right side out. Slip in the incontinence pad and press the Velcro strips together.
