How to Build Water Dog Ramps

Building a boat ramp for your dog can make boating with your dog simpler and more accessible. For dogs who can't jump the distance between the dock and a boat, a boat ramp is an excellent solution.
Creating a simple, durable ramp for your dog to use is a simple process that requires only a small amount of work. Using high-quality materials to construct a simple ramp will ensure that your ramp will last longer, and your dog will be able to easily get on and off of your boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your boat near the dock or landing ramp, and measure the distance between the two with a measuring tape. Add a foot onto that measurement and purchase plywood or a strong plank. Purchase wood that is at least 3/4 inch thick and 12 inches wide.

    • 2

Purchase two pieces of wood for side rails. Buy wood that is 2 inches by 2 inches. Get a piece of rubber mat or a durable outdoor carpet that won't be damaged by water. Measure the mat or carpet to ensure that it will fit your ramp.

    • 3

Nail your side rails to the edges of your ramp. Hammer in one nail about every 4 to 8 inches along the rails to keep them firmly in place on your ramp.

Attach your mat or carpet to the ramp using carpet tacks. Insert the tacks around all four sides of the carpet. Hammer the tacks in so that they are flush with the mat or carpet to prevent your dog from catching his feet on them.
