Finding the Perfect Fit
Make your dog feel comfortable and relaxed. If he is not used to wearing a harness, he may be uncomfortable while you are trying to measure him. Pet your dog to calm and reassure him. Treats can help distract him as well.
Take measurements using a flexible fabric tape measure. You will want to measure the girth right behind your dog's front legs, the whole way around. This will be your most important measurement. Also, measure your dog's neck and chest to ensure a perfect fit. To measure the chest, place the tape behind the outer side one of his front legs and across his chest to the opposite front leg. This is especially useful for large canines. Write down these measurements for future reference.
Pick out a harness. They can be made from many materials, including nylon, leather and cloth. Cloth harnesses rub less and can be better for dogs with skin problems and longer walks. For a first harness, look for a step-in harness that clasps on the dog's back, since these are the easiest to put on your dog.
If the harness you have chosen is available at a local pet store, take your dog and his measurements with you to ensure a good fit. Many pet store employees can help you pick the perfect harness and get the proper fit. Use the measurements to determine a starting size and then use the adjustable sliders to adjust the harness to your dog. You want to be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's coat to prevent rubbing. There should be adjustable sliders in several places on the harness to customize it to his exact size.
If purchasing the harness online, many sites provide a form for you to enter your dog's measurements so that they can send the correct size. Be sure to read the company's return/exchange policy, in case the harness does not fit.
After your dog has started wearing the harness on a regular basis, be sure to check occasionally to maintain the perfect fit. Enjoy walking your dog!
