How to Measure for Dog Booties

Dogs have been man's best friend for centuries. They have been hunting partners, protectors and family companions for humans on every continent, and are still a fixture in many homes around the world. Today, dogs are kept mainly as companions in most families, and hundreds of new products are developed every year for the comfort and well-being of our furry friends. Dog booties are a popular item in many cold weather climates, and they protect your dog's feet while outdoors. 1. How to Measure for Dog Booties

    • 1

Buckle your dog's collar around his neck, and attach his lead to the collar. Many dogs do not like to have their feet touched and will try to walk away, so securing your dog with his collar will make the measuring process much simpler. Hold the lead under your knee, or gently tie your dog to a sturdy object to prevent him from wandering off.

    • 2

Hold your dog's foot gently in your hand, and measure the width across the bottom of his pad. Place the measuring tape over the middle of his pad, which will be the widest section, and measure from the outside of the left-most toe to the outside of the right-most toe. Write this measurement in your notebook as a reminder so you can order the right size booties.

    • 3

Place your measuring tape at the very edge of your dog's toenails, and measure back to the end of his pad. This will give you the length of your dog's foot. If your dog's toenails are extremely long, trim the nails before measuring for a more accurate length measurement.

    • 4

Wrap the tape around the thickest part of your dog's pads to get the circumference of his foot. Make sure you do not hold his foot too tight or he will pull his toes together and you will get an inaccurate measurement.

    • 5

Run the tape up your dog's leg from the front of his toes to his hock to get a measurement of the long bones in the bottom of his leg. The hock is the joint at the back of his leg that allows it to bend, functioning similarly to the human knee. Many tall dog booties come up the leg and secure up toward the hock, so knowing how long your dog's leg is will help you get booties with the best possible fit.
