Directions to Make Dog Leashes

Walking your dog on a regular basis is important for its health. Most states have leash laws stating that your dog must be on a lease when not in your yard. Leashes are available cheaply at most retail and pet stores. However, they can be uncomfortable due to size differences. Making your own leash can be a fun and cheap way to personalize your dog walking experience.
  1. Dog Leash

    • This personalized dog leash is a comfortable and sturdy dog leash. Provide at least eight feet of nylon webbing and a metal snap. These can be bought in most hardware stores fairly cheap. Make sure the snap is large and strong enough to resist the dog's pulling strength. Simply tie the webbing through the metal snap to create one end of the leash. Tie it around the snap as you would a necktie. This will make sure it stays tightly. To make a handle, sew the other end of the nylon into a loop that is large enough for your hand to fit comfortably. This dog leash resembles most store bought leashes, but can be made for a fraction of the cost. In fact, you should have enough left over material to make a few leashes.

    Rope Dog Leash

    • The rope dog leash is one of the quickest and cheapest types of homemade versions. Get about eight and a half feet of rope, a lighter, and a wet cloth. Melt the ends of your ropes with the lighter to prevent fraying. Put the flame out with the wet cloth. Tie a loop in one end of the rope. This will be your handle. Use overhand knots to safely secure your handle. Loop the other end in the same way and the leash is done. Push one loop through your dog's collar, tie it, and it is ready for use. The rope dog leash may seem easy and cheap, but its uses are diverse. If you want a shorter leash, you can push one loop through the collar. Grab the loop and hold it in your control hand. You can also one loop in each hand for a quick control method if your dog gets out of control.
