How to Clean a Pet Fountain

Pet fountains are a convenient way to ensure that your pets are getting the cleanest water possible for drinking. They also relieve you of water worries when you are away or at work. But pet fountains are not maintenance free. Most models come equipped with charcoal filters that need to be replaced to keep them free of unhealthy mineral deposits. Water levels need to be maintained in all units and pet fountains also need to be cleaned regularly to remove debris, hair, fur and food.

Instructions

    • 1

Change the pet fountain charcoal filter at least every eight weeks. This is assuming that your model has a charcoal filter. Most do, but to double check, flip the unit over and look for a well housing. The well housing will have a small door on it that can be opened easily. Slide the old filter out and pop the new one in. Clean the filters in a warm-water rinse between replacements.

Clean the pet fountain motor every two weeks. Pet fountains run on a motor that is powered by an electrical source. The motor needs to be cleaned to keep it from burning out. The motor is located on the bottom of most units and can be removed by rotating it 90 degrees and pulling it straight out. The motor can be washed in a bowl of warm, soapy water and left out to air dry.

Place the main part of the pet fountain in the sink and clean it with soap and warm water. Use a sponge or plastic scrubby to remove tough stains. Try not to submerge the pet fountain in a sink full of water. Simply give it an initial rinse, clean it with the soapy water and give it a final rinse to remove the soap.

Allow the unit to air dry. Replace the motor and fill the fountain housing and bowl with cold water. The pet fountain can then be placed in its desired location. Plug the pet fountain into a three-pronged (polarized) outlet.

Set the water flow rate on the unit and refill with water when necessary. You can use a damp sponge for spot cleaning the pet fountain between deep cleanings.
