How to Measure for a Martingale Collar

Originally designed for dogs with neck larger than their heads, martingale collars have become popular with owners of all types of dogs. A martingale collar is a type of choke collar that will cinch up when the dog struggles against it, but remains loose and comfortable at all other times. If you are considering a martingale collar for your dog, it is important to take the proper measurements of your dog. You need to take 3 different measurements to find the correct martingale collar.

Measure the biggest part of your dog's head with the measuring tape. A proper measurement here will ensure that your dog will not be able to back out of the collar.

    • 2

Measure the narrowest part of your dog's neck with the tape (right behind the head). For longer-haired dogs, make sure you measure as close to the skin as you can get to ensure a proper fit.

    • 3

Measure your dog's neck at the midpoint (widest part) of the neck. For dogs with a lot of hair, measure the midpoint loosely so the collar will rest comfortably on the fur.

Match your measurements with pre-manufactured collars, or have any number of pet suppliers customize a collar for your dog.
