Pet Urine Odor Recipe
-
To make a easy-to-apply homemade pet urine odor remover, mix 2 tsp. baking soda, 2 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap and 2 cups hydrogen peroxide in a glass jar or old bowl. Make sure the hydrogen peroxide is 3 percent---this is the type found at most pharmacies, retail and grocery stores. Stir the pet odor removal solution with a spoon to dissolve all the ingredients. The solution should be used within one hour for full effectiveness. Do not cover the solution with a lid, plastic or any other covering.
Using the Homemade Pet Odor Remover
-
Test for colorfastness when using the solution on carpet, upholstery, or other fabric. To do this, put the solution on a small, hidden spot. Check 24 hours later to see if the fabric or carpet has lightened. If the color holds, you can proceed.
Wipe up the fresh pet urine as soon as possible, then pour the odor remover solution onto the urine spot. Let the solution soak for 24 hours. Do not rub, scrub or disturb the area or the solution. After the allocated time is up, take a clean towel or paper towel and blot up any remaining solution. Let the area air dry. If you are removing the urine from carpet, vacuum the carpet once it is dry.
For dry urine odor stains, pour the solution onto the area where you smell pet urine. Let the solution soak for 24 hours. After the allocated time is up, take a clean paper towel or cloth and blot up any remaining solution. Let the area air dry. Remember, do not rub or scrub the area or the solution.
Pet Urine Odor Removal Tips
-
For areas where the pet urine is old and strong, you should treat the area with the removal solution more than once. If removing a urine odor from a sofa, carpet or a mattress, treat the area at least two times with the removal solution. Concrete, wood, tile and other hard surfaces or floors require at least three treatments. Make sure you wait 24 hours in between treatments and let the urine removal solution set undisturbed.
To remove pet urine from a mattress, triple the urine removal solution recipe, then pour the mixture on to the mattress. Let the solution set so it can reach the pet urine and neutralize it. You may want to treat the mattress in the morning so the solution can work on the odor all day.
Carpet Shampooer and Vinegar
-
If you have a carpet shampooer or access to one, fill the machine with clean water and 1 cup of white vinegar, then use the hose attachment to rinse your cloth surfaces treated with the homemade pet urine removal solution. The vinegar will leave your cloth surfaces smelling fresh.
