Protection from Chewing
-
Protect your fence by not allowing a dog to chew on it. When dogs chew on wire fences, they can pull them apart bit by bit. It is dangerous for a dog to chew on and consume wire, and even if they do not eat the wire, it pulls apart the fence bit by bit. Prevent your dog from chewing on your fence by buying a length of plastic snow fence and lining the inside of your fenced in area with it. You can also use chicken wire, although dogs who chew on a regular wire fence will chew on that as well. Snow fencing will cover the fence from the inside, and the dogs will not be able to get to the wire sections to begin chewing on them. Secure your snow fence by making sure it is stuck in the ground and also by tying it to the fence itself.
Protection from Jumping
-
Protect your fence from the effects of a jumping or climbing dog. When a dog jumps on a wire fence, they can bend the fence apart. Big dogs can jump and climb over the fence and escape. Even little dogs who cannot jump over a fence can put pressure on the fence constantly by bouncing into it again and again. Keep your dogs from jumping on a fence and bending it or breaking it by planting a row of shrubs or plants along the interior side. Plants that are somewhat pokey, like ivy, aloe, or evergreen, will be uncomfortable for dogs to climb on, and they will be less likely to bounce against the fence. The growths will protect your fence from a bouncing and jumping dog.
Protection from Digging
-
Protect your fence from falling in if a dog digs underneath of it. When dogs dig under fences, they cause a fence to collapse. They can also escape from the holes they have made. Prevent this by making sure that the fence is not at ground level, but at least a foot into the ground. Line the interior of the fence with big rocks that a dog cannot tip over or climb on top of.

How to Protect a Wire Fence From a Dog
A wire fence can keep your dog inside your yard, which is safer for the dog than being loose outside. However, while a fence is safe for a dog, a dog is not always safe for a fence. Dogs can chew on fences, jump at them to bend them, or dig underneath them to destroy their protection. There are several strategies to protect your fence from a dog. If you protect your fence from your dog, you won't need to replace your fence or repair it very often.
