Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your dogs' rectangular bed so that you will know how much fabric to purchase. Double the length and add an extra five inches to the length and width so that it covers the top and bottom of the bed. For a dog bed that is four feet long by two feet wide, you will need fabric cut eight feet and 5 inches long by two feet and five inches wide.

    • 2

Pick a fabric that won't irritate your dog's skin. Wool can cause itching and flaking, while cotton and fleece both work well. When you have decided on a fabric pattern, purchase a spool of thread that compliments the colors of the fabric. You don't want the thread to be noticeable.

    • 3

Wash, dry, and iron the fabric before you begin sewing it. This makes sewing the fabric easier, and creates a softer feel for your dog.

    • 4

Fold the fabric in half horizontally, then cut directly down the middle leaving two equal-sized pieces of fabric. An exact match is not necessary because you have allowed enough extra fabric for this purpose.

    • 5

Lay one piece of the fabric down on a flat surface, with the back side facing up. Place your dog bed on top of it and trace around the bed with a pencil or, mark the dimension with straight pins. Repeat this step with the other piece of fabric.

    • 6

Place the two pieces of fabric together so both back sides are facing out, then pin the four side sides together.

    • 7

Begin making your seam about three inches up from your tracing, and sew three sides leaving one side open, so that you are able to place your dog bed inside.

    • 8

Turn right side out and slip the dog bed inside. Finish by sewing up the last open end. Cut any remaining stray thread, and make sure you remove all straight pins before letting your dog lay on it.
