How to Compare Puppy Foods

Puppy foods are specially made to take care of your growing pup's bones, teeth, muscles, coat and energy level. Puppies generally need about twice as much nutrition as adult dogs. But not all puppy foods are created equal; some don't satisfy they puppy's needs as well as others.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the main label on the dog food bag: it should be labelled as "puppy food" to be adequate for your puppy's nutrition.

    • 2

Go through the qualifications of the puppy food. Choose a puppy food that's labeled as a specific product, like "chicken and liver for puppies." Labels like this mean that the food is made up of at least 95 percent meat. Eliminate from consideration any foods made up of corn meal or alternate substitutes.

    • 3

Find the AAFCO-approved label of "a complete and balanced diet." Only foods that have been tested and approved as beneficial diets receive this stamp. Choose a brand of puppy food that has this label, as it means it's already been put through extensive testing.

    • 4

Find the ingredients of the puppy food. Choose puppy food that lists a good source of protein first, like chicken or lamb. Look for puppy food that contains sources of protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins and minerals. Eliminate any puppy foods lacking these qualities.

    • 5

Eliminate any foods that use artificial colors, additives, and sweeteners, as these are not good for puppies and might have detrimental affects on puppies with allergies. Buy a puppy food that has good sources of natural proteins and vitamins.
