Function
-
Invisible fences keep animals contained without having to fence in your yard. An underground wire runs the perimeter of the boundary you set for your dog, and an electronic transmitter connects to the dog's collar using radio waves. When the dog gets too close to the boundary, the collar emits a warning to the dog, encouraging him to stay within the boundary.
Types
-
There are several systems associated with the invisible fence. Not only can you keep your pet within your yard, but you can also purchase an indoor system to keep pets out of certain rooms or even off the furniture. Further, systems are available that simply help with dog training, such as training your dog not to bark.
Effects
-
The sensation emitted by the dog's collar is not pleasant to the animal, therefore he will not like getting too close to the boundary. According to InvisibleFence.com, the correction is similar to the static electricity you feel when you touch a metal doorknob after shuffling your feet on carpet. Invisible fences are meant to train the dog to stay away from the boundary, so the effect of the fence is unpleasant, but mild. Invisible fences are not harmful to dogs.
Cost
-
As of September 2009, a basic invisible fence system could be purchased for around $185. This system includes 500 yards of wire and a transmitter that works up to 150 yards away. A more elaborate system, such as the Ultra Smart Contain N Train, sells for about $350. This sophisticated system allows nine intensity options so you can use the level that is perfect for your dog. In addition, the Ultra Smart system works with more than one dog, and you can use different intensity levels for each animal, depending on their personalities.
Disadvantages
-
Invisible fences may not work for all dogs. Dogs with a high pain tolerance may simply disregard the signal from the collar. In addition, people walking past your house will not know that the dog is contained and may be frightened by it. The fence does not keep other animals out, so stray dogs or cats may freely enter your property and potentially disturb your pet.
