Fun Fact
-
MGM's classic film, "The Wizard of Oz" helped make the image of a dog in a bike basket a permanent part of Americana. The dog who played Toto was a veteran of many movies and earned $150 a week--three times as much as the human actors who played Munchkins.
Identification
-
Dog baskets shouldn't be confused with dog carriers. A dog carrier is much like a dog crate. It is closed on all sides with openings for ventilation. If you are bicycling across country, or to work downtown, a dog carrier is the safest choice for your pet.
Types
-
Dog baskets are of a basic type, but they come in a variety of styles. Some people prefer a wicker basket because it is traditional and attractive. Others prefer a basket made of nylon or some other such sturdy yet flexible material.
Considerations
-
A wicker basket isn't practical for long or arduous rides, but its vintage look and taut structure are ideal for jaunts around the neighborhood or park.
Safety
-
Whatever the style, a bike basket should provide a way of strapping a dog in securely. Dogs get excited on bike rides, and should have only enough wiggle-room to be comfortable.
Warning
-
Choose familiar routes when taking your dog for a bike ride. Surprises can lead to accidents. Use as much caution as you would conveying a child.
