Car Restraints for Dogs

Many people take their dogs with them wherever they go now. Traveling by car is sometimes your best option when you need to get somewhere and want to bring your dog with you. Even if your trip is just down the road to run errands, though, you still need to restrain your dog in your vehicle--both for the dog's and your safety.
  1. Types

    • There are two main types of car restraints for dogs: crates and dog seat belts.

    Crates

    • Choose a crate if you are traveling and will be staying at a hotel room when you reach your destination. Also, the crate gives your dog a safe, familiar place in the vehicle. If the crate is small, keep it in place on the seat by using the seat belts of your car.

    Seat Belt

    • If you do not have the space for a crate, a special canine seat belt may be your best option. There are many designs and sizes available, so you can choose what will make your dog the most comfortable (see Resources).

    Warning

    • Do not restrain your dog with the seat belts installed in your car. Dogs can easily get out of the restraints or get themselves tangled up in them.

    Laws

    • Some states now prohibit having a dog in a car without a restraint due to accidents caused by dogs startling their owners.
