Things You'll Need
- Flat buckle collar
- Colorfast fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Fabric glue
- Needle and thread
Instructions
Measure your dog's flat buckle collar to determine how much fabric you will need to cover it. Add 2 inches to your measurement to give you extra to cover the entire length of the collar.
Lay your fabric out flat and place a thin bead of glue along the center. Press your collar into the middle of the glue, aligning the buckle with the end of your fabric to keep from covering it up. Run another bead of glue along the remaining side of your collar, folding the fabric over and gluing any remaining edges to completely cover your collar. Let the collar dry for 24 hours to give the glue time to fully set.
Cut a simple tie shape out of the remaining section of your fabric. Draw the tie shape of your choice on a piece of light cardboard, cutting carefully around the design to make a template for your tie. Make the template 1/2 inch bigger around each edge then your final tie shape, so that you can fold the edges over to prevent fraying. Lay the template on your fabric, marking the design with a pencil and trimming it gently from the fabric.
Run a light bead of glue around the edge of your tie shape and fold the edges over to seal the fabric from coming apart. Press the fabric down firmly, running your finger along the fold to create a tight fold and even lines for your tie.
Place a few drops of glue in the center of your collar and press your tie onto the wet glue. Hold the tie onto the glue firmly for two or three minutes to make sure the tie stays put and does not shift or move as it dries.
Thread your needle with a heavy-duty thread and pass a few stitches through your tie to secure it to the collar. Use a thread color that matches your tie to keep it looking stylish and professional. Trim any loose threads to prevent your dog from chewing them and to give your new tie collar a neat, polished look.
