Avoid Over-the-Counter Oroducts
-
Dr. Randall recommends all pet owners avoid using over-the-counter flea control products. Randall said the main problem with over-the-counter flea and tick control products is that fleas and ticks build up a resistance over time. He said over-the-counter products for dogs have been proven to have some effectiveness, but the ones for cats have not and can prove to be dangerous for smaller pets. "They don't kill the first bug," he said. "All they are is an insect growth regulator. It may keep some eggs from hatching, but you'll get pitiful control over fleas and ticks."
Frontline Is a Viable Option

"It does what it says it does," Randall said, "in addition to killing ticks that might attach to you or your pet."
