How To Attach an ID to a Dog Collar

Attaching an ID to your dog's collar increases the chances of your dog's return, if it should ever run away or get lost. Engrave your dog's ID with your name, phone number and home address and attach it securely to your dog's collar. Some dog tags slide onto the collar or are attached with a key ring, but the most secure option is to rivet the tag to the collar.

  • Oblong metal dog tag with holes on each end
  • Fabric or leather dog collar
  • Two cap rivets
  • Marker
  • Multi-sized hole punch

Instructions

    • 1

Check that your cap rivets are the right size for the holes in the dog tag.

    • 2

Mark two places on the collar where you want to attach the tag.

    • 3

Match the stem of the rivet to the right sized hole in your multi-sized hole punch and punch holes where you marked the collar.

    • 4

Push a cap rivet stem through the underside of each hole. Slide the tag onto the stems, on top of the collar, and attach a cap to the top of each stem.

    • 5

Place the flat side of the anvil under the base of one stem and place the concave end of the setting tool on the cap.

    • 6

Hammer the setting tool until the cap and stem fit tightly together.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 with the second cap rivet.
