How to Insulate My Doghouse

When you love your dog like a member of your family, or like a beloved friend, its comfort is your top priority. Dogs love being outdoors, but need to be protected from the cold of winter and the heat of summer. Insulating your dog's house will provide it with a comfortable shelter from the climate year round.

Instructions

    • 1

Build the house on an elevated platform, rather than directly on the ground, to avoid the house sitting on the cold ground.

    • 2

Build a slanted roof, so that snow and debris do not accumulate on the roof.

    • 3

Insulate the walls. The best (and cheapest) materials for doing this are the cedar chips commonly used in animal cages and dog bedding. They will trap the warm air in the dog house, and aid in keeping the house warm by retaining your dog's own body heat.

    • 4

Add a warm and thick layer to the bottom of the house. This will help to block the cold air coming up off of the ground.

    • 5

Add a wind-proof flap to the entrance to the doghouse, to block the cold wind from entering. You can also try to shield the front of the house by placing the entrance on the side of the house with the least access to the wind.
