How to Order Swabs for DNA Tests for Dogs

DNA testing became available for pets in 2007. Dog breeders may seek DNA testing to confirm or contest bloodline claims. Mixed-breed owners may use DNA testing to determine the breed composite of their pet. DNA testing may also be used to screen for breed-related health problems. Canine Heritage is a company that has found a niche market in DNA testing for dogs. DNA testing for dogs ranges between $35 and $80. No veterinary visits are required. The DNA kit is ordered, the swabs taken, then the kit is returned via the return mailer to Canine Heritage. A standard swab or swab brush will be included as standard equipment in the testing kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Order a canine DNA test kit from one of the major suppliers (see Resources section).

    • 2

When the kit arrives, retain the mailer to return the kit contents to Canine Heritage.

    • 3

Using the swab or swab brush, gently scrape cells from the inside of your dog's cheek. Very light pressure is needed to gather cells from the cheek.

    • 4

Carefully package the swab with the cheek sample in the enclosed packaging material and place in the mailer.

    • 5

Using the addressed label, mail the sample and kit to Canine Heritage. Results will arrive within four to six weeks.
