How to Keep a Doghouse Warm

There are more than 66 million dogs in the United States. One in every three homes has one living there. There is not much question that the dog is man's best friend. Of course it is always a good idea to return the favor by becoming your dog's best friend, and that means making sure your pet has the right food, appropriate veterinary care, and a warm place to get out of the elements during cold, inclement weather.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise your dog's house several inches above the ground. Place bricks, wooden blocks or cinder blocks under each corner to ensure the doghouse is stable and secure. This will allow rain and snow run-off to flow under the house rather than inside.

    • 2

Face the doghouse away from the prevailing winds in your area. This will help keep the elements from blowing inside where your pet is.

    • 3

Insulate the doghouse floor. Lay a 1-inch layer of Styrofoam on the floor of the doghouse, then lay another layer of plywood on top of the Styrofoam. Secure the plywood through the Styrofoam to the lower floor with nails or deck screws.

Position the door opening to the doghouse to one side, rather than in the center. This will help to contain the natural body heat generated by the dog when it is inside the house.

Install a pet space heater in the doghouse. Many models are available at pet stores. Be sure to purchase one that offers a cool-touch surface to prevent burns. Ensure any cord is positioned on the outside of the doghouse to prevent chewing, and that the heater and cord are rated for outdoor use.
