How to Build a Doghouse With a Cement Floor

Nothing's too good for your four-legged friend. So when it's time for you to build him a doghouse, you want it to be as comfortable for him as possible. Sure, you could buy a doghouse that's ready-made, but you really want him to have something special. Follow these steps and you'll build the doghouse of your dreams--and his.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the doghouse is the right size. Its width and length should be 12 inches and 18 inches longer than your dog, respectively. And its height should be about 9 inches taller than your dog in the front, and about 3 inches taller than your dog in the rear of the doghouse.

    • 2

Keep your dog dry by making the roof is on an angle. Base your calculations on the height determined in step 1. The sides of the doghouse must be identical so make your measurements, then cut the side panels with a saber or a circular saw., and install them to the base with weather-resistant screws. By the way, use untreated lumber throughout the doghouse, except for the base, because the chemicals they contain are toxic for animals.

    • 3

Reinforce the doghouse by adding braces to the corners with plywood strips that have been screwed together. Attach them to the sides and the back panel with weather-resistant screws.

    • 4

Insulate the walls of the doghouse so that your dog will stay warm in the winter and not swelter in the summer. After installing the insulation, cover it with 1/4-inch plywood to keep your dog from eating it.

    • 5

Make a door for your doghouse. It should have a opening that is approximately 2 inches above his back and 3 inches wider than his body. Then install it to the sides and base using weather-resistant screws.

    • 6

Put on the roof which should be about 1-inch larger than the opening to help with the rain. Make cleaning easier by installing it with weather-resistant hinges in the back of the doghouse. Once in place, cover it with tar paper.

Finally, make the roof waterproof by using asphalt shingles. Make sure that the nails you use are not exposed on the underside of the roof because they could be hazardous to your dog. Install the shingles by starting on the lower side of the roof, overlapping them as you go. When you are finished, use a small amount of roofing cement to help keep out moisture.

Make the concrete floor by digging down about 4 inches an area that is the same as the dimensions of the doghouse. Then put down 2x4's secured by nails as a concrete frame. Pour the concrete to the top of the frame, and then smooth the surface by using a bull float that you can rent. Once the concrete has set, you can place and secure your completed doghouse on it.
