How to Make a Belly Band for a Male Dog

When owners of male dogs have an ongoing problem with their pets urinating on furniture and carpets inside the home, one solution is to make a belly band. A belly band essentially acts as a doggy diaper and a physical barrier. For anyone who can sew, making a belly band is not a difficult process and can be accomplished in under an hour. All it takes is some thick absorbent fabric, sewing materials and a tape measure.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the dog's belly using a tape measure by holding one end in place on the dog's back and wrapping the other portion around the dog's stomach. Write down the measurement to help you remember what it is.

    • 2

Cut a strip of flannel or other thick absorbant fabric that is the same length as the dog's belly measurement. The width of the fabric should initially be about 20 inches. Then fold the material lengthwise once or twice to add to the garment's thickness and provide added reinforcement. The final width should be about 10 inches, but can vary according to the size of your dog.

Use a needle and thread or sewing machine to stitch the edge of the fabric to sew the outer sides in place. Next, place the rough side of the Velcro on one end of the belly band and sew it onto the band. Then place the Velcro's soft side on the other end of the band and sew it on.

Place the belly band around the dog's waist, then fasten the Velcro strips to each other. If you wish, you can also add a sanitary napkin or incontinence pad inside the band to hold more urine and to cut down on laundering. When the band is on, adjust it as needed to ensure that the tip of the dog's penis remains fully inside the garment.
