How to Make Easy Dog Clothes

Keeping your beloved pooch warm and dry does not have to put you in the dog house! Clothing for canines is popular, but pet boutiques charge a fortune. Follow these practical steps using inexpensive materials you have around the house and from your local craft store to get the results you desire.

First get a clothing measuring tape and measure Fido from the shoulder to the rear and then around the mid section. Leave an extra inch around the diamteer if your dog is extra furry, but a snug fit is best.

Think practical materials -- brushed burlap, cotton-knit -- works best and is most comfortable and easy to pop in the washing machine. Decide if you want to line it and choose a felt based lining cut slightly smaller to be sewn in either by hand or sewing machine.

Before you go out and buy the materials, search around the house for what you have. I have found that old, stretched out leg warmers can enjoy a second life for small to mid-size dogs-- either as a doggy tube top or sweater with holes strategically cut for the front legs.

Lastly, think of adding a small pocket to the top with a zipper for treats, poop bag, etc. and have your dog carry along his "stuff."
