Instructions

    • 1

Determine what style of backpack you want for your dog. Lightweight, designer packs are more suited for day trips, while heavier, sturdy canvas packs are best for hiking and camping.

    • 2

Measure your dog's length and girth for proper fit. To measure his length, hold the measuring tape between his shoulder blades and measure to the base of the tail. To measure the girth, hold the tape measure at his should blades and wrap it around the widest part of his chest. Most backpacks are adjustable, but a general idea of your dog's length and girth is necessary for proper fit.

    • 3

Slide the backpack over your dog's head and center it on his back. The front of the backpack should rest at the shoulder and should not bunch up or otherwise impede your dog's movement.

    • 4

Tighten the straps on the back so it fits securely. Most packs have an adjuster around the neck area and others around the leg holes. Be sure that you adjust all appropriate straps so that the pack fits snugly but does not cut into your dog.

Allow your dog to wear his new pack in short sessions to get him used to it. Praise him and offer treats when he walks calmly without noticing the pack. Repeat the on and off process several times per day and your dog will soon learn to enjoy wearing his new backpack.
