How to Build a Dog Box

Many individuals want to ensure their dog is safe while traveling in their truck. And oftentimes, having a dog ride in the cab can be a distraction. But many states don't allow dogs to ride in the back of the truck because of the danger of injury. Building a dog box is a good way to keep your canine safe while riding in the back of your truck.

Choose your dog box materials. Look for materials that are strong, such as aluminum or wood. You can also choose plastic materials that are covered with a weather-proof coating. These materials can be found at your local home improvement store.

    • 2

Determine the size of your dog box. There are two factors to consider when building your dog box: your dog's size and your truck. A general guideline for measurements is 2 feet wide, 2 feet tall and at least 3 feet long.

    • 3

Cut your materials. Use a circular saw to cut the six sides to your box. Use your measurements to ensure the sizing will be correct.

    • 4

Drill holes to allow the circulation of air. Using your drill, make several holes on each side of the box. But avoid drilling holes in the top of the box to avoid leakage while raining. Also, drill a hole where you would like the latch to go.

    • 5

Make sure not to leave any sharp edges. When drilling holes, make sure the holes aren't sharp. Loosen up any extra particles to make edges smoother.

    • 6

Use bolts to attach the six pieces together. After the box is created, attach a latch to your front entrance to allow your dog to exit and enter the box.

    • 7

Weld the box to your truck bed. This is the most important step because it will keep your dog securely in your truck. Weld four latches to the bed of your truck and the corresponding parts to the bottom of the dog box. Once you fasten the box to the latches, your dog box will be securely in place.
