How to Choose a Dog Sweater

Measure your dog before you shop for a dog sweater. Place a tape measure at the base of his neck and run it down to the base of his tail, where it meets his body. Record this measurement. Many dog sweaters are sized by the length of your dog’s torso.

Decide where you want to shop for a dog sweater. Speciality pet stores will offer a large variety of styles. Large discount stores with a pet retail section will also offer dog sweaters. Although they may not have a large variety, their prices will be less than a speciality store.

Determine which cut or style is best for your dog. When choosing a dog sweater for a male dog, avoid sweaters that cover their entire tummy area. They may accidentally soil the sweater when urinating. Look for sweaters with a ‘u’ shape tummy, that covers their chest, but leaves their back half exposed.

Select a sweater made of fabric appropriate to the weather. Vinyl and plastic rain jackets are great for spring. Cotton T-shirt style dog sweaters are best for moderately cool weather. Choose knitted, lined and reinforced dog sweaters for the colder winter months.

Look at the closures on the dog sweaters. Some sweaters will offer zippers. Theses are particularly helpful for very active dogs. Elastic and velcro closures are good for more docile dogs. Other closures include buttons and snaps. Try several styles on your dog to determine which style will stay in place.

Choose a classic look or go fashionable. Dog sweaters with classic colors and fabrics are readily available at large pet superstores and discount retailers. Pet boutiques often offer more chic styles with funny phrases, logos or pictures printed on the dog sweater. Decide how you want your dog to look.
