How to Walk an Italian Greyhound on a Martingale Lead

Italian greyhounds are known for their slight stature and wafer-thin frames. The Houdini of the dog world, these petite companions are notorious for slipping out of traditional collars and running off at high speeds. This can lead to potentially disastrous consequences, and can cause quite a dilemma for the dogs' owners. However, Italian greyhound lovers can rest assured that this problem can be alleviated via the proper use of what is known as a martingale lead.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your dog’s neck with flexible measuring tape, and purchase a martingale lead that corresponds to that measurement. Most Italian greyhounds have a neck size of between 7" and 10".

    • 2

Order your martingale lead from a site like Hound Togs or NorthWind Whippets and Collars. (Follow the links under Resources.) Martingale leads are not easily found in stores.

    • 3

Slip the loop of the martingale lead over your Italian greyhound’s nose and over the ears until it forms a collar around the dog’s neck.

    • 4

Pull the length of the lead so the loop tightens snugly around the neck.

    • 5

Use the length of the lead to guide your dog, as you would with a traditional leash.

    • 6

When the dog pulls or attempts to slip away, the loop will tighten around his neck and prevent him from pulling further. Before you know it, your Italian greyhound will no longer attempt to pull or slip away.
