Instructions
Decide what type of décor is desired for the collar. This might include floral and jewel embellishments, charms, hand painting or even adding a permanent neckerchief.
Determine the type of collar desired. The two most popular types of dog collars are leather (or vinyl) or woven. While not all decorative techniques will work on either collar across the board, each has several ways that it can be decorated. This decision will have some impact on the remaining steps below.
Purchase the supplies needed to complete the project. Be certain that the collar is the proper size for the dog and for the planned design.
Sketch out on paper where to place the chosen decorative items onto the dog collar.
Glue ribbon flowers and leaves onto the dog collar with permanent adhesive, following the drafted sketch. Cluster the flowers around the center of the collar, spread them out over the length of it, or to take a more asymmetrical design. All of these designs work well for well for a dog of any size.
Set faux jewels on the collar as planned in the sketch. This can be done several different ways. They can be glued onto the collar with permanent glue that is appropriate to the collar’s material. Prepared sequins can be ironed onto a woven or fabric collar following the directions of the brand type for those jewels. Jewels can also be set into the collar with the help of a device that sets metal claws that hold the jewels in place.
Attach bracelet slides onto the dog collar. Such slides are generally letters, numbers or simple designs like a star, heart or cross. Done in both silvertone and goldtone, they are often set with crystals or rhinestones. Some also include enameling or embossed designs.
Attach charms to the collar ring. Many pet stores and stores that have pet sections sell specialized charms that can be attached to a collar. They come in a variety of designs, colors and materials. However, any type of jewelry charm can be used the same way.
Hand paint a design onto a leather or vinyl collar using paints that are appropriate to its material. The best designs are simple in nature, such as geometric patterns. However, any type of design that will fit into the space allotted is acceptable.
Sew a neckerchief for the collar. This is simple to do. It can be made out of an existing handkerchief or any type of fabric. Cut out a triangle the proper size for the dog in question. Trim the long pointed ends away. Hem around the handkerchief or pink the edges to prevent fraying. Make a slot at the top of the kerchief by folding the fabric over making a pocket just large enough for the collar to slip through. Glue the openings closed over the collar.
