Instructions
Measure the length and width of the Piddle Pads you typically purchase using a measuring tape. Record these measurements so you can reference them while building your Piddle Pad holder. Piddle Pads typically measure 21-by-23-inches or so, but sizes could differ by brand.
Find a plastic tray big enough to accommodate your Piddle Pads while leaving at least 1 inch of extra space on all four sides. Check your local home improvement store for plastic trays or use the lid from a large plastic tote. This tray will be the base of your Piddle Pad holder.
Cut two pieces of 1-by-1-inch hardwood to the height of your Piddle Pad measurement with a table saw or hand saw. Subtract 2 inches from the width of your Piddle Pad measurement to account for the thickness of the first two pieces, and cut two additional pieces of 1-by-1-inch hardwood to this length.
Arrange the four pieces of 1-by-1-inch hardwood in a rectangular shape, sandwiching the two shorter pieces between the ends of the longer pieces. Drive nails from a nail gun through the outside of the longer pieces into the thickness of the shorter pieces to secure them in place. This will be the frame for your Piddle Pad holder.
Paint the hardwood frame you just constructed using interior-grade latex paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Apply two or three coats of clear polyurethane to the wooden frame so it becomes waterproof. Allow the polyurethane to dry in between each coat.
Lay the wooden frame flat inside the large plastic tray and adjust its position so it is centered.
Place two metal hinges against one edge of the wooden frame. Position the hinges so they are spaced approximately 2 inches from either end of the frame on one side.
Use a felt-tip pen to mark the position of the screw holes in the hinges onto the outside of the wooden frame and the bottom of the plastic tray.
Pre-drill the holes for your hinges into the side of the wooden frame and the bottom of the plastic tray using a power drill. This will make installing the hinges much easier.
Attach the metal hinges to the wooden frame using 1-inch wood screws, driving them through the pre-drilled holes you just made. Use 1/2-inch wood screws to attach the other side of each hinge to the bottom of the plastic tray.
Test the hinges by lifting and lowering the wooden frame. To use your Piddle Pad holder you will simply lift the frame, slide the pad into position, then lower the frame to hold the pad in place. The polyurethane coating on the wood will prevent stains and odor, while the plastic tray will protect your floor from leaks.
