How to Make a Fabric-Covered Martingale Collar

A double-loop martingale collar helps keep dogs under control without applying too much pressure to their necks and throats. This piece of equipment -- which has its roots in the equestrian world, where martingales help steady the heads of jumping and galloping horses -- is typically made of canvas, nylon or leather. A properly fitted martingale sits loosely on a dog̵7;s neck until the animal starts to pull. At that point, the loop tightens enough to restrain the dog; it releases this tension when the dog ceases straining. You can modify your dog̵7;s martingale with fabric to add extra comfort to the straps.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the two loops of the martingale collar using the measuring tape. The main loop, which goes around the dog̵7;s neck, will be the longer piece; the pulling loop that provides the pressure and slack will be the shorter piece.

    • 2

Cut each measured fleece into strips with scissors. Cut the length to match the length of each loop and cut the width with about 5/8-inch of extra fabric.

    • 3

Lay the fleece strip so that the soft side faces out, where it will make contact with the dog. Position the main loop of the martingale over the corresponding fleece strip.

    • 4

Fold the edges of the fleece over the martingale loop.

    • 5

Thread an 1180 size sewing needle that is suitable for stitching fleece with polyester thread.

    • 6

Hand-stitch the edges together so that the seam remains on the inside of the loop.

    • 7

Repeat the process with the smaller pulling loop of the martingale collar.
