How to Build a Dog Hurdle

A dog hurdle, or jump, is a piece of equipment commonly used in dog agility trials and training. Though dog hurdles can be purchased from several different online and brick-and-mortar stores, they can easily be made at home from materials obtained from hardware supply or home improvement stores. Some basic woodworking knowledge is helpful, but not necessary to complete this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Coat the insides of four end caps with PVC glue. Press them firmly onto the four 12-inch segments of PVC.

    • 2

Apply glue inside two of the "T" connectors at the horizontal openings. Press two of the 12-inch lengths of PVC into these holes, so that the top of each "T" post is substantially elongated.

    • 3

Apply glue inside the remaining openings of the "T" connectors, and press the short 1 1/4-inch stubs into these holes. These two segments will fashion the feet of the hurdle.

    • 4

Apply glue inside the perpendicular openings of two more "T" connectors, fitting the 50-inch length of PVC between them. The points of each "T" connector should both be facing the same direction, so that the piece can lay flat.

    • 5

Turn the large piece fashioned in Step 4, turning it on its side so that the holes of the "T" connectors on one side are laying against your work surface, while those opposite are pointed upwards.

    • 6

Apply glue to the insides of the upward-facing "T" openings, and press the stubs of the feet into them. Make sure that both are level and facing the same direction, perpendicular to the 50-inch PVC segment, so that the final shape forms a capital "I."

    • 7

Glue two more end caps onto the ends of the two 30-inch lengths of pipe. These are the upright pieces.

    • 8

Glue the upright pieces into the open sides of the "T" connector on the bottom segment.

    • 9

Clip the adjustable cups onto the upright PVC pieces, and place the remaining PVC point into them. Add additional adjustable cups and PVC jump bars as desired.
