How to Make Booties for a Chihuahua's Feet

Your chihuahua's small paws have pads that are susceptible to heat, cold and wet. A set of DIY booties protects the paws during walks in the winter or summer, and keeps them from getting wet in the rain. Use denim or cotton canvas if you are protecting your dog's feet from heat, and fleece for cold or wet. Heat will melt fleece and is not appropriate for protection from hot ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 3 inch by 2 inch rectangle on a piece of thin cardboard and gently round the bottom corners. Cut this out. It is your template.

    • 2

Fold a 14 inch by 10 inch piece of fabric in half vertically, so it is 7 inches by 10 inches. Press the crease.

    • 3

Place the template with the rounded edge flush with the fold on one edge of the fabric. Trace around the template. Repeat three more times. Cut out all four pieces. The fold is the toe of the bootie.

Cut four pieces of 1/2-inch hook and loop fastener to 2 inches. Center the loop side of the hook and loop fastener on the side of each piece of fabric that will be the front of the booties, 1 inch from the top opening. Fold the pieces of fabric so the fastener is between the front and back of the booties. Sew the side seams with a sewing machine, leaving a 1/4 inch seam. Turn each bootie right side out. The fastener will be centered on the front of each bootie now.

Pin one half of the other side of the fastener to the back half of a bootie, even with the loop section of the fastener. Half of the hook side of the fastener is sewn to the back of the bootie, and the other half is left free to attach to the loop section. Sew the fastener in place. Repeat on all booties. Put the booties on your dog. Pull the free end of the loop sides of the fasteners to the front and secure them to the hook sides to tighten the booties around the dog's ankles.
