DIY Dog Paw Socks

Many dogs have sensitive feet because of breed, exposure to the elements, allergies or past experiences. If humans walked around barefoot all the time, we too might have sensitive feet. In the winter in particular, a dog's paws are exposed to extreme cold and are prone to forming balls of ice between the toes, trapped by the fur. During other seasons, your dog's paws are subjected to rough pavement, sharp rocks, burrs and thorns. Protect your dog's paws with easy-to-make socks or booties.

Instructions

Measure the size of your dog's paws from above the ankle bone to the floor and across the widest part of the paw. You'll use these measurements to make a simple dog paw sock out of children's socks or to sew your own socks.

Use your dog paw measurements to buy children's socks. Most socks won't easily stay up on a dog, so they must be secured around the top. Sew a Velcro strap around the top to anchor the socks.

Sew your own dog paw socks as an alternative to using children's socks. Though slightly more work, it is a relatively simple task. Choose a fabric that suits your dog's activity. For example, use Cordura ripstop nylon for wet, snowy and icy activities. Use fleece inside for added warmth. Upholstery fabric, suede or pack cloth work as well, but suede is harder to sew. Even flannel would work for inside dogs with sensitive feet.

Use your dog's paw measurements to cut out 8 U-shaped patterns to form the sides of your dog socks. Sew 2 U-shaped patterns together together around the outside to make the sock, leaving the top of the U open. Turn the socks inside out. Sew a Velcro strap around the top to secure the socks to your dog's ankles.
