How to Make a Dog Couch Protector

If you enjoy having your dog on the couch with you, but don't like all the hair and wear and tear that a dog can put on your couch, a protector allows enjoyment and a nice-looking couch. They are available at many dog supply stores, but can get pricey. Making your own is economical and allows you to choose one that fits with your decor and personal taste. A fabric or craft store is likely to have all the materials you need and the staff is likely available to give you tips and advice if you need help choosing the right gear and tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your couch. Write down the height, length and depth of your couch, which allows you to purchase enough fabric. If you plan to make a tight-fitting dog protector, write down dimensions for the arms and back. This will be more difficult and may not be the right project if you are a novice sewer.

Make or purchase a pattern. This ensures the couch cover will fit and the pieces will match together, making for a better looking and fitting dog protector. Use an old couch cover that has been cut apart to make your own pattern or look for one at the fabric store.

    • 3

Choose a fabric for your dog protector. Consider the decor of your room so that you can match the fabric and choose one that easy to wash. A heavy-duty fabric will hold up better to the demands of a dog than will thin cotton or silk options.

Lay the pieces of the pattern on your fabric and pin. Cut around the pattern to make your new couch protector pieces.

    • 5

Sew the dog couch protector. Use the old slipcover as a guide to where to make the seams or follow the directions that came with the pattern you purchased. Use thread to match, which hides the stitches for a blended look. Cover the couch when the cover is complete and make adjustments as necessary.
