How to Make Booties for a Puppy

Long days of frolicking on the trail can take a toll on your pup's feet. To avoid bloody nails, and pads worn raw, make a set of booties to protect your dog's feet. It only takes a few minutes, will keep your dog happy and, possibly, save you some cash at the veterinarian.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your puppy's paw at the widest point, and then measure the length of your dog's foot from the tip of the longest toe up to the puppy's knee joint.

    • 2

Lay out a strip of duct tape as long as the measurement you took of your puppy's foot up to the knee with the sticky side facing up. If the circumference of your puppy's paw is greater than the width of the duct tape, lay out another strip of the same length, sticky side up, and overlap it over the first piece. You want your booties to have about a little extra space beyond the measurement you took, so add duct tape, or use the scissors to trim the pieces accordingly.

    • 3

Lay out another strip or strips of duct tape matching the width and length of the previous strips exactly. Press the sticky side of these strips together with the sticky side of the earlier strips such that you have a long piece of duct tape with none of the adhesive exposed. This is the base of your booty.

    • 4

Fold the booty in half. The fold will be the toe of the booty.

    • 5

Wrap duct tape around the toe of the booty two or three times, sealing the sides.

    • 6

Test the fit of the booty on your puppy. It should be slightly snug, but not tight. It will look like the booty is too tall, but look for the point where you could trim the excess material and still allow for ample protection of your dog's foot without interfering with the dog's gait.

    • 7

Remove the booty from the dog and trim the excess material at the top of the booty with the scissors.

    • 8

Wrap more duct tape higher up the length of the booty to seal the open sides. Do not wrap all the way to the top of the booty so a small slit remains on either side of the booty near the top. This will give your puppy more freedom of movement.

    • 9

Place a small strip of the hook side stick-on Velcro vertically on what will be the front of the booty. Attach to that a longer piece of the hoop side Velcro ̵2; this piece should be long enough wrap around your puppy's foot to secure the booty.

    • 10

Repeat the process three more times so your puppy has a full set of four protective booties.
