How to Make a Dog Bed of Fire Hose Material

Fire hoses are made out of materials manufactured to withstand high levels of water pressure. Old fire hoses are even used as safety sheaths for chainsaw blades. Dog toys can be manufactured out of fire hose material to stand up to a dog's bite. Given its strength, this material is ideal for making a dog bed that will last. Dogs prefer to lie on something soft rather than on a hard floor. Making a dog bed out of fire hose material involves sourcing the material, identifying a needle strong enough to sew through the material and choosing the best filler for the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how big of a dog bed you want to make. Measure the length of your dog and use that measurement for the size of the bed. For example, if your dog is 23 inches long, make a bed that is 25 inches long and 25 inches wide. The extra inches are for the inner seams of the bed.

    • 2

Find a source where you can purchase enough fire hose material to meet your needs. Try a fabric store first and ask where you can buy it.

    • 3

Cut the fabric to your measurements and sew three sides of the square together with a one-inch seam all around. Turn the square inside out and sew the zipper into the fourth side. The zipper allows for the filler in the bed to be changed or cleaned.

Choose a filler for your dog bed. Choices include cedar chips, synthetic polyester and memory foam. Cedar chips have a nice smell and are a natural flea repellent. The filler should be durable, firm and breathable.

    • 5

Put the filler into the dog bed and close the zipper. If using chips, shake the bed to spread them evenly around.
