Doggie Day Care
-
Hire a dog walker or take your dog to doggie day care while you are out during the day. This gives your dog a chance to interact with other dogs as well as receive some human care and interaction. Even if you can afford day care or a walk only one or two days a week, the change of scenery and routine are good for your dog.
Companionship
-
Get a second pet -- another dog or even a cat. Dogs enjoy the companionship of others as much as humans do. Just having a friend to spend the day with might help keep your dog from getting into mischief.
Food Puzzle
-
Give your dog food puzzles and games. A number of toys are designed to be filled with a small amount of food or a treat or two. To access the treat, the dog must chew or manipulate the toy. This can occupy (or distract) you dog, as well as provide mental stimulation.
Excercise
-
Exercise with your dog before you leave the house. Not only will your dog enjoy the time spent with you, but the exercise may calm down the dog or even tire it out. A long walk, a game of fetch, Frisbee or tug-of-war or a trip to the dog park are good ways to exercise together.
Classes
-
Enroll your dog in obedience classes or agility training. Some breeds, such as border collies, need a "job." Structured activities give the dog an outlet for creativity that otherwise might be manifested in excessive barking, chewing or other inappropriate behaviors.
Company
-
Leave the television or radio on while you are away. The sound of human voices provides some company for your dog. Similarly, leaving a small light on if you are going to be out after dark and leaving an old sweatshirt that smells like you (provided your dog is not prone to chewing) are ways to give comfort to a lonely or nervous dog.

How to Keep Dogs Amused
Dog are said to be man's best friend, but the hectic pace of many people's lives means that their companions are left home alone for many hours. Similar to people, dogs get bored. In some cases, boredom can cause a dog to engage in destructive or bothersome behavior. Consider a few ideas for beating the boredom.
