How to Make a Dog Bone Out of Fabric

Dogs require mental stimulation and playful toys to ward off boredom and destructive behavior. Dog toys can be expensive to buy, especially considering how easy they are to make at home. A homemade stuffed dog bone toy is a great way to stave off boredom without breaking into your pocketbook.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the fabric you want to use for your dog bone. Keep your dog's habits and destructive nature in mind when selecting fabric. Use multiple layers, fleece or a thicker material for more destructive dogs.

    • 2

Draw a bone shape on a piece of paper and cut it out for the pattern. Be sure the picture is large enough to allow for a 1/4-inch seam on all sides of the bone. If you're not comfortable with your drawing abilities, locate an image online and use it for the pattern.

    • 3

Pin the pattern to two pieces of the fabric, right sides facing inside, and cut out two bone-shaped pieces. If you plan to use double layers, cut two additional pieces.

    • 4

Align the edges of the bone pieces with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Pin them together to hold the pieces in place.

    • 5

Sew around the edge of the bone, 1/4-inch in from the edge. Leave a small section of the edge un-sewn to allow the bone to be turned right-side out and stuffed.

    • 6

Trim away some of the fabric around the curved sections to help the fabric to lay smooth when turned right side out. Clip the layers of fabric individually to prevent damage to the seam.

    • 7

Turn the fabric right side out through the open area and press the edges to push the seams to the outside edge. Fill the bone with stuffing and use a slip stitch with a needle and thread to close the opening.
