Instructions
Select the right ball for your dog. For most small to large-sized dogs, a soft tennis ball is perfect. A tennis ball may be too large for a toy- or miniature-sized dog. Pet stores carry veterinarian-approved balls for small canines. To avoid death or injury, never use a hard ball such as a baseball or golf ball.
Let your dog know it's play time. Your dog can tell by your expressions and the sound of your voice that it's time to play.
Play with the ball yourself in front of your dog to illustrate that the ball is non-threatening and for play. Let your dog smell and examine the ball before throwing to familiarize him or her with it.
Gently toss the ball well in front of your dog and encourage it to get the ball. If your dog does not chase the ball, show how it's done by picking up the ball and gently throwing it again. Never throw the ball in a forceful way, as this may frighten your dog.
Set aside time for your dog to play and catch the ball everyday. Don't be discouraged if your dog is unresponsive the first few days of ball throwing.
