How to Use a Dog Tow Leash With a Tricycle

A dog tow leash allows an owner to ride a bicycle while walking the dog Many tow leashes also support the dog powering the bicycle or towing it. Many dog tow leashes can be adapted easily to tricycles. The tow leashes that can be adapted are those with a round clip that encircles the seat pole or handlebar beam. Tow leashes that screw into the rear of the bike will not work with tricycles.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a dog tow leash that had a connector built for a round object.

    • 2

Unhinge the connector and clip it to the head tube of the tricycle. The head tube is the bar between the handle bars and the main front wheel. Extend the tow leash forward or to the side; depending on whether the dog will tow the tricycle or just walk along side or it. The exact method of attachment will vary by tow bar manufacturer.

    • 3

Check to make sure the connection between the tow bar and the tricycle is secure by pulling the tricycle by the tow bar.

    • 4

Attach the dog to the clip at the end of the tow bar. Seat the child on the tricycle and test out the system. Parents must always keep an eye on the child when using the tow bar with a tricycle. Larger dogs may be able to easily pull the tricycle at high speed; which may be dangerous and frightening for the child. Parents should maintain control of the dog at all times.
