Chew Toys
-
Chew toys are a must for new puppies. If you don't have them, you're likely to end up with destroyed shoes, furniture or anything else that looks appealing. Many vets say to avoid rawhide chews because they can choke your puppy, but speak to your vet to see what she recommends. Chews should also be for puppies, because adult dog chews can be too hard for a puppy to gnaw on.
Balls
-
Balls are a great toy for puppies, and they are basically an essential. Dogs love to chase them around as well as play fetch with them. Tennis balls, rubber balls and star balls are all a good bet for puppies.
Activity Balls
-
These are a variety of toys that allow you to place a treat inside of a cube or ball that your dog has to work to get at. This will keep the pup entertained for long periods of time and also help its urge to chew.
Anything Soft, Cuddly and Squeaky
-
Toys that squeak and are soft on a tender puppy mouth are a good idea. Some suggested toys for this are plush toys, squeaky balls, stuffed animals and rope toys.
What Not to Give Your Puppy
-
There are several things you shouldn't give your new puppy to play with. Old clothes and shoes are not a good idea because giving them to your dog will make it seem like it's okay for them to chew these things. Toys with sharp edges or made with materials like sponge or wool should also be avoided. Anything with small parts, like eyes, that could be detached is a no-no.
