Instructions
Make a list of local competitions. No matter what kind of dog you have, competing in dog shows always starts at the local level. Check with local dog associations, vets and trainers to find out when and where local shows are being held. Contact the show organizers themselves to find out which categories your mutt can compete in.
Focus on training. Because competitions for mutts are skill-based, you will need to be sure your dog is trained and ready to compete. A basic obedience course is a must, but to really stand a chance at the trophy, you̵7;ll probably need more specialized training. Your local pet trainer should be able to tell you which courses would be most appropriate for your dog and the type of competition in which you want to enter him.
Get your own equipment. If your dog will be doing obedience and agility trials, get equipment, such as ramps and hoops, for him to practice with at home. Daily practice can get your pooch into perfect shape for the competition and keep him from forgetting all of his tricks between matches.
Enter your dog into a local competition at the lowest level. All dogs must start at the lowest level and then progress through the ranks as they win ribbons and trophies.
Show up on time with your dog on the day of the show; a late arrival could keep your dog from entering the day̵7;s competition.
